Methods:
1 current-and ex-smokers with (n= 311) and without COPD (n= 270). Current-and ex-smokers> 40 years with≥ 5 pack-years were included if they did not have a significant other lung disease such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, or an interstitial lung disease. COPD was defined by the presence of an FEV/FVC< 70% FEV< 80% predicted, and non-COPD controls by FEV/FVC≥ 70% and FEV> 90% predicted. both
