Many of the problems of the prior art interprocess com munication and inter-network data transfer are overcome in accordance with the principles of the present invention. Existing connectionless server and client programs may be modified to communicate with connection-oriented rou tines operating on different devices connected to connec tionless or connection-oriented networks by establishing connections or virtual circuits between such programs. A server program provides services for other programs and routines, and a client program utilizes the services provided by a server program.

Such connectionless server and client programs commu nicate with a connection manager before transferring data.
