The topics studied under the heading “judgment and decision research" are broad. Moreover, these topics are studied with methods and from perspectives that can seem puzzling to people with backgrounds in other areas of psychology. In this chapter, we consider some of the recent history of research on judgment and decision making (JDM), covering (only) the last fifty years or so.(For other retrospective treatments, see Fishburn, 1988, 1989a, 1989b; Hogarth, 1993; Kahneman, 1991) A complete history of the field would have to stretch back several centuries at least, and be situated relative to several neighboring or more inclusive topics, such as emotion, thinking, and perception. Our goal in this chapter is more modest and is more contextual than truly historical.
