In a few short years this ceremony of recognition has established itself as a distinctive tradition of the Library, the means by which an institution whose key task is the collection and preservation of the national cultural record might express appreciation of the singular contributions which have been made to Australian life by certain outstanding individuals. Those selected for recognition have come from diverse backgrounds and have represented different fields of interest and achievement. In some way or another though, each has played a part in setting down in print or in pictures some aspect of Australian literature, history or culture. Occasionally, some colossus can be claimed to have ranged confidently across the boundaries.
