Over the past 50 years, the number of K-12 students being educated via homeschooling has grown tremendously–and given the more recent impacts of COVID-19 on the public school system–it seems that this segment of the schooling population is poised to continue expanding in the coming years. This work examines homeschooling from an economist’s perspective which helps to formalize and illuminate the logic behind a family’s choice to homeschool.
Despite its popularity, homeschooling often appears to be an enigma to academic researchers who aren’t immersed in the subject; many researchers have had little to no interaction with the practice and are often quick to perceive homeschooling families as making educational choices driven purely by social or religious factors.
