Northern Ireland and Colombia are two countries that have experienced armed conflict for the best part of the twentieth century, with severe consequences for their respective civil societies. In Northern Ireland’s case, according to Jaramillo (2015, 192), this conflict extends, in general terms, back as far as the 12th century" with the Anglo-Norman invasions" on the island, although this author recalls that in the 1920s, the government of Great Britain divided the territory between the Irish Free State-of Catholic orientationand its northern, British and predominantly Protestant counterpart.
Acosta, Nin, and Pérez (2014) explain how, in 1801, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was created. Ireland-which had been autonomous until then–had agreed to this, but several groups of citizens were dissatisfied with the loss of independence. Tensions between the British and the Irish grew cold, and some of the Irish started a campaign for self-governance, culminating in the Easter Rising-an insurrection in Dublin-in 1916. This
