Medical marijuana is now legal in over half of individual states located within the United States; however, it remains a federally prohibited drug. Federal prohibition has limited the ability of marijuana to be studied in randomized controlled trials. Due to the lack of scientific studies, health care professionals remain skeptical of the therapeutic value of marijuana. Public opinion, in contrast, supports marijuana and its medicinal use. Pediatric patients with epilepsy have been a focus of the medical marijuana debate with an increasing number of families attesting to marijuana’s therapeutic value and advocating for its legalization. Across the country, parents of children with epilepsy are providing their child with medical marijuana, often without the guidance of a health care professional.
