Description
Even though invasive species are a serious concern for marine ecosystems in Mexico, it has been only about a decade since marine invasive species began to be studied. An updated checklist of 211 introduced exotic or cryptogenic species of unicellular organisms, invertebrates, and marine vertebrates in Mexico is included. Ballast water stands out as the main pathway of introduction, followed by fouling and aquaculture activities. Invertebrates represent 62.5% (132 species) of invasive or potentially invasive species, of which 31 are crustaceans, 23 belong to the Polychaeta, 23 are mollusks, 18 are ascidians, 14 sponges, 13 moss animals, 9 are cnidarians, and 1 kamptozoo. The case of invasion by the lionfish, Pterois volitans and Pterois miles, in the Gulf of Mexico and Mexican Caribbean is discussed.
