This entry presents the origins and commonly used definitions of the journalistic practice of “crowdsourcing.” Following a brief overview, journalistic crowdsourcing activities are situated within the news production process. Subsequently, benefits but also challenges, risks, and costs of crowdsourcing in journalism as discussed in the literature are elaborated. The entry concludes with avenues for future research.
