Description
Geographers have long taken an interest in the travel patterns of the population, and studies of migration, commodity flows and transhumance have been traditional topics of investigation. In regions with large and growing urban populations there has naturally been an interest in travel within and between cities and this has traditionally been closely related to studies of urban growth, retailing and market structure. So far, most models of intra-urban travel have dealt with aggregates of the population and this has been both reflected in and encouraged by the collection of aggregated data. After working with existing predictive planning models, many researchers have concluded that satisfactory dynamic models cannot be built without a greater understanding of the factors affecting individual travel behavior. This has led to the current interest on the part of many investigators in studying travel behavior at this level, using disaggregated data. The movement activities of a household form a complex set of spatial patterns when viewed over time, as members of a household interact with various elements of the urban region
