Principle of the PPM algorithm. Piecewise parabolic interpolants, a (x), are fit to conserve mass and give a continuous function in one dimension. If the fit leads to an internal maximum or minimum, it is replaced in that interval by a constant value. The solid line is the function a (x) as used in the method. The dashed line is the polynomial fit used before correcting for the local maxima found in that interval.
