Wireless positioning has become increasingly important in recent years due to emerging of location-based services. Numerous applications use wireless positioning ranging from emergency calls, vehicle navigation, and network optimization to resource management, automated billing, asset tracking, and inventory management. Focusing on cellular networks, we survey the advances in positioning techniques in this paper. First, the fundamental techniques are described and compared in terms of complexity and commercial aspects. Then, advanced techniques which address the challenges of fundamental techniques are introduced.
