Description
Much of the research and writing on women’s prison experiences highlight negative living conditions and damaging effects on the individual (eg, Kruttschnitt and Gartner 2005; Kruttschnitt and Hussemann 2008; Owen 2005; Owen, Wells, and Pollock 2017). This emphasis largely reproduces findings from research on men in prison (reviewed by Liebling and Maruna 2005), though there is evidence that incarcerated women experience some pains of incarceration more acutely than do men (Crewe, Hulley, and Wright 2017). For instance, more than incarcerated men, imprisoned mothers engage in frustrating attempts to parent their children as mothers behind bars who are largely out of touch with the outside world (Baldwin 2017; Celinska and Siegel 2010; Enos 2001; Esterling and Feldmeyer 2017).
