In the United States, the numbers of girls and women that courts and correctional agencies supervise in the community is larger than the numbers who are incarcerated. The US federal government has recognized that justice‐involved girls and women should have their primary and unique needs met. Documentation of girls' and women's unique needs fueled attention to gender‐responsive supervision and programming. The combined attention to gender‐responsive and evidence‐based practice makes it timely to examine the research on gender‐responsive community‐based interventions with the aim of ascertaining what works. A meta‐analysis of studies of programs for women offenders evaluated with the most rigorous designs showed that gender‐responsive programs were more effective than others in reducing recidivism.
