Left-right ideology is the most under-researched of the major forces in American politics. It pervades law-making, judicial decision-making, party politics, and most other elite politics. Ideology is a less profound force in mass politics, but still significant. Even when innocent of ideology themselves, voters still choose between ideological agendas.
