Description
This article describes a combined measure of athletic and academic success, the Student-Athlete Performance Ratings (SAPR), in the light of the proposed NCAA sanctions for collegiate athletic programs that fail to adequately educate student-athletes. The SAPR is therefore an improvement over the Academic Progress Rate (APR) mechanism. The APR measures how well athletic programs educate student athletes and will be used to sanction programs that do not perform well academically. However, the APR neglects the athletic side. A method for computing SAPR scores was applied to 64 Division I-A football programs in conferences represented in the Bowl Championship Series.
