METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed on all CVC insertions in cancer patients treated at a free-standing pediatric hospital (2007 to 2019). The primary exposure was PPA: single-dose, systemic antibiotic administration within 2 hours preceding CVC insertion, and no antibiotic exposure within the previous week. The primary outcome was CRBSI within 10 days of insertion
RESULTS: Overall, 1,900 consecutive CVC insertions in 1,304 pediatric cancer patients were analyzed. PPA exposure occurred in 919 (48%) cases, no antibiotic exposure in 393 (21%), and any other antibiotic exposure within 7 days before insertion in 588 (31%). Overall, CRBSI at 10 days after CVC insertion occurred in 34 (1.8%) patients, of whom 22 (65%) received cefazolin PPA and to which 9 bacteria were resistant (41%; Table 1).
