Description
Our distinction between values and traits is insufficiently clear for Boski. We are happy for the opportunity to elaborate. Summarizing from our earlier publications (eg, Bardi & Schwartz, 2003; Bilsky & Schwartz, 1994; Caprara, Schwartz, Capanna, Vecchione, & Barbaranelli, 2006; Roccas, Sagiv, Schwartz, & Knafo, 2002): Traits are enduring dispositions, values enduring goals. Traits describe what people are like, values what they consider important. Traits vary in the frequency and intensity of their occurrence, values in their priority as standards for judging behavior, events, and people. Values are organized hierarchically into a system of relatively stable priorities, traits are not. Appropriate measurement of the two constructs reflects these differences. Items to measure values assess the importance of a goal. Items to measure traits assess the frequency and consistency of enacting a behavior. Boski’s proposal that …
