Description
The genus Vigna Savi includes 7 subgenera of which three subgenera, Ceratotropis, Plectotropis and Vigna include cultigens. Subgenus Plectotropis includes the cultigen V. vexillata, the Zombi bean of East Africa. Subgenus Vigna includes two cultigens cowpea (V. unguiculata) and bambara groundnut (V. subterranea), the centers of diversity of both of these cultigens are in Africa (Ng and Monti (1990)). The subgenus Ceratotropis includes eight cultigens that are used for their seed, pod or forage production, particularly in Asian countries angularis)(Tomooka et al., 2001). Of these, greengram (V. umbellata) and azuki bean (V. are important cultigens from sections Ceratotropis and Angularis respectively were detailed by Tomooka et al.,(2002b) and Gantait et al.,(2009).
