Description
Arctic regions are warming three to four times faster than the global average, with regions like the Svalbard Archipelago experiencing significant reductions in ice-cover. This glacier retreat has exposed new terrestrial landscapes, which harbour emerging soils. In order to help better understand how temperature and moisture dynamics vary with depth and over multiple time scales in developing Arctic soil, we present results from two sensor installations located on the forefield of Midtre Lovénbreen glacier, Svalbard. Each site was instrumented with autonomous point sensors that capture the soil temperature and moisture profile with depth and with a surface array of electrodes used to image the soil electrical resistivity in 3D, a proxy for moisture and freeze-thaw dynamics.
