Description
Mangrove forests cover the coastal areas of Kutch district in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The Maldharis, the inhabitants of this area, have used the mangrove forests for their traditional livelihoods, including raising Kharai camels, whose staple food is mangrove leaves. The objective of our interdisciplinary project is to explore directions of transformation for the sustainability of this community in an uncertain environment under climate change. Our analysis of remote sensing data has allowed us to understand how the biomass of mangroves in the region has changed over the past 35 years. In particular, it should be pointed out that the biomass at the mangrove community level increased almost monotonically even during the period when they were able to graze freely in the mangrove communities before access to the mangrove forests was restricted by the local government in 2005.
