Several methods of reducing ammonia emissions from pig housing are discussed, in particular removal of slurry with a scraper system. Research showed that while a scraper system was capable of reducing emissions for some categories of pigs, it was not suitable for all; therefore attention should be paid to the conditions under which ammonia is produced with emphasis on microbial activity. It was concluded that future research must be aimed at optimizing scraper systems on pit floors with or without additional flushing.
