Although studies have found an association between adolescent problem behavior and deficits in parental support and control, questions remain concerning the causal nature of these relations. Using longitudinal data, this study explored prospective reciprocal relations between perceived parenting and adolescents' substance use and externalizing symptoms. A community sample of adolescents and their parents (N= 441) was studied, within which half of the adolescents were at risk for problem behavior because of parental alcoholism. Covariance structural modeling revealed full reciprocal relations between adolescent substance use and levels of parental support and control. Furthermore, although adolescent externalizing behaviors prospectively predicted parental control and support, parenting was not prospectively related to externalizing symptoms.
