Background
In December 2019, a new form of coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was identified in Wuhan in China. 1 The SARS-CoV-2 virus causes an infectious disease, which is referred to as ‘COVID-19’. 2 In January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak to be a ‘public health emergency of international concern’. 3 COVID-19 has been responsible for millions of deaths and hospitalisations worldwide. 4 The WHO has reported that, globally, there have been 761,071,826 confirmed cases and 6, 879,677 deaths (as of 22 March 2023). 5 COVID-19 cases have continued to fluctuate since January 2020.
