This chapter* reports the results of a major meta-analysis on the effectiveness of programmes providing cognitive-behavioural approaches in correctional settings (such as prisons and jails) in reducing recidivism. It is part of a comprehensive detailed review and meta-analysis of the evaluation research on the effectiveness of criminal justice-based rehabilitation programmes for offenders in any form of custody. The overall meta-analysis is of primary research reports collected as part of the Correctional Drug Abuse Treatment Effectiveness (CDATE) project, a project funded for four years by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The general nature of this project and a number of key methodological considerations have been described in some detail in Chapter 2.
