Following the successful RMetS main conference at the University of Reading, the PhD students held their own conference also located at the university. The student conference, which started as the main conference finished on 2 July 2009, was the sixth annual meeting for PhD students researching atmospheric and oceanic sciences. The purpose of these conferences is to give young researchers the experience of oral and poster presentations in front of a friendly and knowledgeable audience. Aside from the obvious experience benefit, the conference provides an invaluable interactive element which allows all members to socialise and network with their peers. The oral presentation sessions were of an exceptionally high standard this year, both with regard to the presentations themselves and the audience participation.
