In this paper we give an overview of the development of variable exponent Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces from the beginning of the 1990s till today. We describe the basic theory and mention some applications. Additionally, we prove a new result on the density of smooth functions in variable exponent Sobolev spaces on the real line.
