The emerging field of comparative prostitution policy studies faces several challenges. Besides the conceptual and methodological difficulties that all comparative policy studies face, there is the morally and politically charged nature of sex work. However, there is also a more fundamental problem: the lack of a coherent system of prostitution policy classification. When researchers do not share an understanding about which general policy models exist, or even what constitutes a particular model, any comparison of specific policies becomes fruitless. This chapter seeks to amend this shortcoming by presenting a typology of three general prostitution policy models (or regimes), termed repressive, restrictive and integrative.
