Creativity has, at least traditionally, been conceived of as a property of the individual. Creativity, however, refers to the production of high-quality, original, and elegant solutions to complex, novel, and ill-defined, or poorly structured, problems. Turning creative problem solutions into viable innovative products requires the support of many groups-from top management teams to production and marketing. The complex nature of creativity and innovation in" real-world" settings has an important, albeit often overlooked, implication-creativity and innovation in the" real-world" requires leadership. This chapter examines how leaders, at least those effective in leadership, contribute to creativity and subsequent innovation.
