Description
This chapter addresses that domain of theory and research concerned with personal characteristics relevant for either instrumental or socioemotional adaptation to unexpected, ambiguous, or severe events or circumstances. Our goal is to present a selective review of that subset of personal resources for which relevance to the stress-mediating process has been demonstrated or might reasonably be anticipated. In pursuing this modest objective, we attempt to identify the more significant stress mediators and to specify some promising directions for future research.
