Description
Simultaneous observations of the same source in gravitational waves (GWs) and gamma-rays probe some of the most cataclysmic events in the universe and create rich opportunities to study fundamental physics, cosmology, and high energy astrophysics. This was demonstrated by the joint observations (Abbott et al. 2017d) of the binary neutron-star (BNS) coalescence GW170817 (Abbott et al. 2019b, 2017e) and the short gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A (Goldstein et al. 2017; Savchenko et al. 2017). These observations led to constraints on the speed of gravity (Abbott et al. 2017a), an independent measure of the Hubble constant (Abbott et al. 2019a, 2017b; Hotokezaka et al. 2019), evidence for heavy element production via r-process nucleosynthesis in a kilonova (eg, Chornock et al. 2017; Cowperthwaite et al. 2017; Kasen et al. 2017; Tanvir et al. 2017; Watson et al. 2019), and more.
