Research publication has traditionally been accepted as an overall measure of academic success. In addition to the obvious and intangible benefits of contributing to the overall fund of human knowledge, research has demonstrated important and tangible benefits with research success. Bastian et al. noted, among academic orthopaedic surgeons, an increased Hirsch index (H-index) was associated with increased academic promotions and National Institutes of Health (NIH) awards in a dose-dependent manner [1].
