Cannabis is the most widely used and variably regulated drug in the world, with increasing trends of use being reported in the United States, Australia, Asia, and Africa (Copeland & Pokorski, 2016). With the relatively recent promotion and commercialization of the use of cannabis for medical and nonmedical purposes, particularly in the United States, there has been a rapid rise in use, particularly in daily use (Davenport & Caulkins, 2016). The term cannabis is used to describe the various products (eg, marijuana, hashish, wax) and chemical compounds (eg, nabiximols) of what are typically the most common species, Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica (Copeland, Rook, & Matalon, 2015).
