Possible interaction between the following were examined: acid precipitation; the atmospheric deposition of trace metals; the geochemical cycling of both these deposited metals and those initially present in the geological substrate; and the biological availability of these metals. Emphasis was placed on atmospheric deposition of air pollutants (H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/, HNO/sub 3/, metals) in areas remote from point sources. Effects on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are considered, again in regions affected by long-range atmospheric transport rather that in more heavily impacted areas close to pollution sources. Conclusions and recommendations for further research are presented. 259 references.
