In these ever more busy and stressful times in academia it is rare (unheard of in our recent experience) to receive an email that brings anticipation of exciting conversations and the opportunity to share these with a wide and, hopefully, receptive audience. The email we received from the editor of this issue of the journal was one of those rare emails. Thank you.

The conversations and observations we want to share began a long time ago, and Mike Dempsey played a part in their development when he was a member of the accounting and finance staff at Leeds back in the early 1990s. We come from different core disciplines (economics for us and physics for Mike) and we have fond memories of spending long days exploring with Mike the fundamentals of finance and digging deep into its core.
