Description
220} Early amErican litEraturE: VolumE 59, numbEr 1 terms Barnhill used to describe the quality of the prints. Some engravings were “amateurish” in style, while others were “elegantly” composed. Because the book educates readers about the various illustration techniques, a sentence or two of description about what features contribute to the quality would have taken an additional step to arm readers with tools to evaluate images they encounter in their research. Overall, Gems of Art is a thought-provoking read for scholars of nineteenth-century cultural productions of all kinds, and it will be referenced for years to come. amy l. sopcak-josEph Wilkes University
