Description
Lechaion was the principal harbor of Corinth, Greece from the Archaic Greek period through Late Antiquity. As the immediate point of access for the city to the western Corinthian Gulf and the broader maritime world, it was larger and more substantial than the city's eastern harbors at Kenchreai and Schoinous. Lechaion is significant for its extensive sheltering area (15 ha), excavated interior basins, and significant Early Christian basilica which is among the largest of its kind in the Mediterranean. New archaeological investigations in recent years promise to reveal significant detail about the settlement and the technology of harbor construction.
