Description
Higher education is identified as one area in need of improvement in the Australian Government's “closing the gap” initiative, which seeks to reduce disparate outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations across a range of social outcomes. Universities however remain dominated by anglo-centric systems of governance and worldviews that impacts completion rates. Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and staff struggle to self-identify or relate to the built and social environment of university campuses. Through the metaphor of a mirror, we discuss how the amplification of whiteness can hinder completion and retention rates of Indigenous students, while also stunting staff promotion to senior leadership and decision-making roles.
