Description
This book chapter describes the nomenclature and organization of the insect virus family Baculoviridae, and is an update of the same chapter from the previously published 8th Report of the International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses. Since the publication of the 8th report, the genomes of baculoviruses from sawflies and a mosquito have been determined and published. Analysis of these genomes and comparison with lepidopteran baculovirus genomes have indicated that a revision of the taxonomy and classification of baculoviruses is necessary. The revision, described in this chapter, divides Baculoviridae into four genera:(1) Alphabaculovirus, which includes the lepidopteran nucleopolyhedroviruses of the old genus Nucleopolyhedrovirus;(2) Betabaculovirus, which includes the members of the old genus Granulovirus;(3) Gammabaculovirus, which includes the sawfly nucleopolyhedroviruses; and (4) Deltabaculovirus, which includes mosquito nucleopolyhedroviruses.
