Political Transition Democracy President Pinochet Political Opposition 20 ABSTRACT (Continue on reverse side if necessary and Identity by block number) The Report discusses the likelihood of a political transition from an authoritarian regime to a liberal democratic format in Chile. After drawing on comparative experiences in Southern Europe and South America, the Report analyzes the political actors and their strategies in either promoting or opposing a transition. It is argued that a transition is not likely due to President Pinochet's commitment to remain in power and the division within the opposition, which remains removed from the population in any case.
