Common wisdom holds that graphic media violence leads to antisocial outcomes. This common wisdom is reflected in the Society for Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics. Technological convergence has enabled terrorist organizations to produce and distribute high quality propaganda videos featuring extreme acts of violence. News media often cover the violent activities present within these videos but struggle with the ethical ramifications of displaying highly graphic images of the acts. Media psychology research indicates that media exposure can increase moral intuition sensitivity through priming and social learning mechanisms. Exemplification theory predicts that exposure to case reports within media content will elicit stronger responses than exposure to abstract information, such as statistics.
