This chapter provides an orientation to the key themes of the book, as well as an overview of the individual contributions. We introduce and develop a number of ideas that underpin the coherence of the collection. Learning is, of course, at the centre of our concerns–supporting other people’s learning is the point of our enterprise. But we approach this indirectly. The book itself is about how people who are professionally engaged in supporting other people’s learning can share their experiences. To bring extra focus to the book, we are specially concerned with situations in which technology is also being used to help people learn. The umbrella term we are using for this is ‘technology-enhanced learning’or TEL, but other terms, such as computer-assisted instruction (CAI), computer-aided learning (CAL), networked/online learning and e-learning carry similar connotations.
