Description
This report highlights findings from the Youth19 Rangatahi Smart Survey (Youth19) about the health and wellbeing of trans students. It is designed to be read with the Youth19 Rangatahi Smart Survey, Initial Findings: Introduction and Methods report, which explains how the survey was conducted, who was included, and how to interpret the results. The Introduction and Methods report (Fleming et al., 2020) and other Youth19 outputs are available at www. youth19. ac. nz.
As part of Youth19, secondary school students answered questions about their gender, including their gender identities. The survey also included items about health, wellbeing, whānau, school, and community experiences. We present an overview of findings for trans youth and young people unsure of their gender identity in the areas of demographics; financial hardship; whānau relationships; peer and community relationships; schooling and aspirations for the future; violence and safety; sexuality; health and wellbeing, including emotional wellbeing and substance use; and access to health services. These findings are compared to cisgender young people (ie, people who identify with the gender they were designated at birth).
