Newspaper comic strips hold great insights into American culture and they should be investigated, analyzed and critiqued through the proper lens. While research about minorities in comics is not dense, results from a few groundbreaking studies over the past three decades uncovered concerning statistics about the presence of both women and Blacks. Glascock and Preston-Schreck (2004) completed a study analyzing minority and gender roles in daily newspaper comics, and two key findings were drawn. First, 96 per cent of characters were White and only 2.5 per cent were Black. Further, many of the representations of women were stereotypical, including women always nagging and being more emotional than their male counterparts.
