Description
Wind energy offers a viable alternative solution to fossil-fuel based generation and can potentially help address many economical and environmental challenges in electric power grids. The variability of wind generation, however, causes major Technical challenges for system operators in terms of efficient integration. This issue will become more severe for system operator as the wind penetration increases. As a solution to this challenge, wind generation is commonly restricted by specific regulations which help reduce its variability at the expense of losing some its generation, i.e., a generation curtailment. This paper proposes a battery energy storage (BES) planning model to minimize wind generation curtailment and accordingly maximize the deployment of this viable technology.
