Description
The association of African American men with danger and criminality is clearly a reflection of a host of variables and a long history of oppression and stereotyping. This paper argues that the way in which the media (and particularly the news media) depict race and crime plays an important role in the stereotyping of black men as violent and dangerous. This paper overviews research concerning media portrayals of race and crime, studies pertaining to the effects on viewers, and research concerning viewers' interpretations of media portrayals.
