This fifth edition of Visual Methodologies contains some significant differences from its predecessor. The opening chapters have been reorganised to provide a clearer introduction to the structure of the book and how readers can use it in different ways. There is a new chapter on designing a research project using visual materials, and the chapters on digital research methods and using images to maximise engagement with research findings have been rewritten. There are clearer references to a range of related methods throughout. All the text has been revised to reflect ongoing developments in both contemporary visual culture and visual research methods. I hope these changes will continue to help social researchers both new and experienced to explore and use images in creative and insightful ways.
