Measurements of passive microwave brightness temperature quantify the intensity of the soil microwave radiation. According to the Rayleigh-Jeans approximation, in the microwave domain the emitted energy from the soil is proportional to the thermodynamic temperature and the brightness temperature Tb is expressed as a function of the emissivity, e, and the effective temperature, Teff, as:
