On April 18, 2023, a destructive rockslide occurred in Torkham town in the North-Western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, province of Pakistan, along the N-5 National Highway. The rockslide occurred early morning (at about 3: 50 am local time) at the Pakistan side of the Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan. This border crossing is located 10 km to the NW of the famous Khyber Pass which was part of the medieval Silk Road trade route between central Asia and the Indian Subcontinent (Fig. 1). Torkham is the main border crossing and trade route between Afghanistan and Pakistan and is very busy with people and the trucks laden with food and other essential supplies entering and exiting from Pakistan and Afghanistan and vice versa.
