The idea for this volume was born with the Mattering: Feminism, Science and Materialism conference held in February 2013 at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. I thank Sahar Sadjadi for co-organizing the conference with me. I thank the Committee on Interdisciplinary Science Studies (and its director Jesse Prinz), the Advanced Research Collaborative (and director Don Robotham), and the Center for the Study of Women and Society for funding it. I thank Karen Barad for giving the keynote address at the conference; the influence of her work on authors collected here is palpable. Only a fraction of the papers presented at the conference could be developed for publication here (while additional authors were included), but all of them stimulated our thinking about contemporary feminist engagements with matter.
